First I changed the dependency makedev to makedev|udev in v1.28.
This resulted in Bug#387943, for which the explanation was use
/dev/MAKEDEV rather than /sbin/MAKEDEV, which I implemented in
v1.29. Now, in Bug#387995, I'm told the opposite. Would someone
please clarify for me what I'm supposed to do? Otherwise I'm going to
 revert to the original behavior.

I am the udev maintainer, so I think I know. :-)
/dev/MAKEDEV will always exist, but /sbin/MAKEDEV will exist only if
 makedev is installed.

I have both packages (udev/makedev) installed, but only /sbin/MAKEDEV
exists. That's why I filed this bug report. I don't have /dev/MAKEDEV

Cheers,
Michael

It may be related to #370540 (which will be fixed in two days) but I do
not understand why, on my system /dev/MAKEDEV is created anyway by
/etc/init.d/makedev.

Interesting. I just checked /etc/rc2.d/ and did not have a symlink to
/etc/init.d/makedev there. dpkg-reconfigure makedev fixed that.
Still I don't know why this symlink was not there before. I did not
remove it afaicr myself. I'm fine if this bug is closed now as it seems
to have been a problem on my side (though I can't explain the absence of
the /etc/rc2.d/S20makedev symlink).

Just out of curiosity: How can udev satisfy the dependency of
powermgmt-base (Depends: makedev | udev) if udev does not ship a MAKEDEV
script. Does udev create one on the fly if makedev is not installed?

Cheers,
Michael

This might be a problem caused by the recent bug in sysvinit. See
/usr/share/doc/sysvinit/NEWS.Debian.gz for details if you don't know
about it already.

OK, I'll close the bug. Thanks.
