Bug#387995: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Bug#387995: MAKEDEV: wrong location in postinst]

This resulted in Bug#387943, for which the explanation was use /dev/MAKEDEV rather than /sbin/MAKEDEV, which I implemented in v1.29. Now, in Bug#387995, I'm told the opposite. Would someone please clarify for me what I'm supposed to do? Otherwise I'm going to revert to the original behavior. I am the udev maintainer, so I think I know. :-) /dev/MAKEDEV will always exist, but /sbin/MAKEDEV will exist only if makedev is installed. I have both packages (udev/makedev) installed, but only /sbin/MAKEDEV exists. That's why I filed this bug report. I don't have /dev/MAKEDEV Cheers, Michael -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth? signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

I just checked /etc/rc2.d/ and did not have a symlink to /etc/init.d/makedev there. dpkg-reconfigure makedev fixed that. Still I don't know why this symlink was not there before. I did not remove it afaicr myself. I'm fine if this bug is closed now as it seems to have been a problem on my side (though I can't explain the absence of the /etc/rc2.d/S20makedev symlink). Just out of curiosity: How can udev satisfy the dependency of powermgmt-base (Depends: makedev | udev) if udev does not ship a MAKEDEV script. Does udev create one on the fly if makedev is not installed? See /usr/share/doc/sysvinit/NEWS.Debian.gz for details if you don't know about it already.
