I'm not sure what to do next to diagnose this problem. This can have several causes. First, please check that your loopback interface and DNS server are correctly configured. Otherwise, it can be caused by a program not registering to the session manager. You should try to remove each of the elements in your session to see which one is responsible. I checked my DNS and loopback interface; both are working normally. If there's some special functionality used by gnome-session, let me know and I can check it. When I login, I create a new session. I disabled all startup programs, but the problem persists. Can I remove any other elements from my session? Thanks, Jack signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Perhaps you can create a blank new user on your system, and check whether it hangs as well? If it doesn't, it would be nice if you could pin-point what particular setting is causing the hang. Bug#391287: hangs for couple minutes on login and logout
Package: gnome-session Version: 2.14.3-1 http://cgi.sfu.ca/~jdbates/tmp/gnome/200610050/.xsession-errors http://cgi.sfu.ca/~jdbates/tmp/gnome/200610050/strace.tgz I recently started using gnome-session, but logging in and out now take a couple minutes. When logging in, for instance, the esd chime plays, the gnome-session start widget appears and the window manager icon appears in it. The interface then hangs for a couple minutes before any other icons are displayed in the start widget. At the same time, these lines appear in .xsession-errors: Gnome-Message: gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds: returning -1 Gnome-Message: gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds: returning -1 I tried using strace to diagnose the problem. Login hangs at 11:48 and logout at 11:51. 11:48 corressponds in strace.4227 to theses lines, repeated over and over: 11:48:21 gettimeofday({1160074101, 114823}, NULL) = 0 11:48:21 ioctl(3, FIONREAD, [0])= 0 11:48:21 gettimeofday({1160074101, 115020}, NULL) = 0 11:48:21 poll([{fd=37, events=POLLIN}, {fd=18, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POL LIN}, {fd=29, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=33, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=34, ev ents=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=35, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=36, events=POLLIN}, {f d=43, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=42, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=26, events=POL LIN|POLLPRI}], 11, 124) = 0 I think process 4227 is originally started in strace: 11:47:53 clone(child_stack=0, flags=CLONE_CHILD_CLEARTID|CLONE_CHILD_SETTID|SIGC HLD, child_tidptr=0x30036728) = 4224 It's not clear to me what gnome-session is doing while it hangs.
