I don't think it is related to this bug. I don't see anything about a
freeze or data loss in the Ubuntu bug above. I would rather say that it
is related to #422077.

So, to be clear, I don't think anybody reproduced the freeze+dataloss
since the patch has been applied in the Debian package, even in Xserver
1.3. And, by the way, the fix finally got committed upstream today.

The patch is still there in the packages in experimental, but apparently
something else has changed in the pci code which made the bug (or
another one with similar symptoms) reappear...

Hi,

This bug was fixed for etch by adding 32_disable_sparc_pci_bridge.diff.
My first guess is that it did not get merged upstream, so it has to be
readded in the Debian packages for 1.2.0. I would appreciate if you
could look into it, as I currently cannot do anything useful myself.

Best regards,

Hi Jurij,

it was reported that #392312 is back in xorg-server 1.2.0, despite the
patch that was added in 2:1.1.1-10. Could you have a look at what might
have broken this?

Thanks,

Bug#392312: xserver-xorg-core: [sparc] Freezes system and causes severe data loss

2006-10-11 Thread Frans Pop
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 1:1.0.2-9
Severity: grave
Justification: starting Xorg trashes partition tables

I tested Xorg on my Sparc Ultra 10 and experienced system freezes. When I
rebooted after one of these freezes, the partition table of my first
harddisk had disappeared making it necessary to install the system from
scratch.

The disk has never before shown problems and also showed no problems
during and after the reinstallation.

Jurij Smakov found the following bug reported by the Sparc upstream kernel
maintainer. It seems to me that it could well explain both the hang and,
because apparently it messes with the IDE controller too, the corruption
of the hard disk.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8020

[...]

And joy, oh joy, I have just discovered that after the last try the
partition table of my second harddisk (that contained my /home dir) is
now gone as well!
So I'd say that proves the relationship between running Xorg and that
problem.

I have confirmed that I do indeed have the SIMBA Advanced PCI Bridge.
