Bug#402276: debian-installer: memory requirements on help page F2

2006-12-11 Thread Holger Levsen
Hi,

As I wrote in another bug-report (#401889 iirc), this doesnt work well (at
least on powerpc): with 96mb I could ran g-i, but the partioner would
frequently crash due to too little memory.

So this limit should be raised to 128mb on powerpc.

That is a different matter, butAFAICT the powerpc boot does not have
anything like the F2 help keys.

Right. But such a text can be added to yaboots boot.msg.

regards,
Holger

I've committed a patch in rootskel for that.

That's something for d-i powerpc porters to decide and implement.

Bug#402276: debian-installer: memory requirements on help page F2

2006-12-09 Thread Holger Wansing

Package: debian-installer

When booting d-i and press F2 at the boot prompt, there
is a note:

You need at least 24MB of RAM to use this installer.

This is not exactly true:

There should be a requirement for the graphical installer,
too, as it needs more ram.

And in #401889 is mentioned, that on powerpc the installer
needs more ram at all.

Please change this to prevent users coming in trouble because
having not enough ram.

Kind regards

Holger

however, as a 32MB limit seems needed for x86 as well (according to most
recent release tests), I have changed the message to mention that.

So this is an argument pro writing such note (not contra):

People type installgui and don't get the graphical installer but
the newt one.

I don't agree. The helpscreens are only for very basic information. The
absolute lower limit of memory supported is such info as the boot may
completely fail if you don't have sufficient memory.

However, the amount of memory needed to run the graphical installer is
something that can be documented sufficiently in the installation guide
(which is what the other BR is about).
