Indeed, I tried to contact the maintainer a few months ago because
there's a problem under Ubuntu (xinetd and xteld issues, relatively easy
to fix a bug has been filed on
 https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xtel/+bug/57303/) but I
never got a reply (and no error message either).

Sorry for the lack of support of this package. I'm really too busy for
months at work. I tried to add xinetd support into xtel few months ago
but didn't have time to test it before an upload.

Yes, but this is an error, I'll have to correct it in Wikipedia. The
international access from http://www.minitelfr.com has ceased for
individuals, but in France, the Minitel network has still around 5
millions of Terminals and as much of emulators and it is still working.
Let alone these commercial services, there are still home run BBS-like
services, as an example see http://eureka.rxl1.com , where Xtel is
explicitly mentioned as a client for an access *via Internet*. So, IMHO,
Xtel shouldn't be removed any time soon. At worst, contact its author at
 http://www.emulateur-xtel.org ...

For current activity of Minitel, you may also have a look at
 http://www.minitel.com .

Well, wrt the large number of DSL/cable connections in France and the
availability of almost all Minitel services over Internet, I don't think
minitel is still actively used.

But if you can help me to update the package, you're welcome.
Especially, if you can test xtel along with xinetd, I could send my last
work to you (not before the next week however).

Best regards.

Oh... I see why I suffered so much with Xtel, then ;)

Although its use is clearly declining for the reasons you described,
Minitel is still actively used. For the latest statistics, see
http://www.leskiosques.com . For instance, in 2005, more than ten
million hours of connection have been registered.

But if you can help me to update the package, you're welcome.

I'd gladly do my best, but be warned: I'm a newbie. I switched to
GNU/Linux only three months ago.

Especially, if you can test xtel along with xinetd, I could send my last
work to you (not before the next week however).

OK, feel free to send it but with as much explanations as possible ;)
Note that you may find the bug report for Ubuntu interesting since it
concerns the use of Xtel with xinetd instead of inetd and provides a fix
from Julien Gilles. Please see
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xtel/+bug/57303/ .

For the whole discussion (5 messages, in French)
that resulted in this bug report
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.user.french/10922/focus=10922
is worth a look IMHO. This fix, once xinetd is installed, works fine; I
tested it.

One final remark: your maintainer account for the Xtel package for
Ubuntu awaits your claim at https://launchpad.net/~delaunay . I know
that Ubuntu is not Debian, but just in case you'd consider activating
it, as Ubuntu uses .deb packages...

Best regards.

All the same, and happy new year (with more free time ;)

Bug#405631: xtel: missing dependency on xfonts-utils

2007-01-04 Thread Julien Cristau
Package: xtel
Version: 3.3.0-5.4
Severity: serious

Hi,

xtel uses dh_installxfonts without using the ${misc:Depends} substvar,
so it's missing a dependency on xfonts-utils.
This means that upgrades from sarge can fail, because the postinst uses
update-fonts-dir --x11r7-layout, which doesn't exist in sarge.
Also, the sarge update-fonts-dir only looks for fonts in
/usr/lib/X11/fonts, while fonts are now installed in
/usr/share/fonts/X11.

Cheers,
Julien
