It may be a bug in the package, or a bug in the way dpkg handles
symlinks on upgrade.

Yep, I found out myself too (but too late...).  Do you have a suggestion
for a fix?  I'm afraid some voodoo in postinst is needed.  I'd like to
keep the voodoo minimal...
