Bug#416438: xserver-xorg-video-i810: XvMC IBM Thinkpad X40 Not Working

2010-04-04 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

Brice Goglin brice.gog...@ens-lyon.org (20/03/2008):
For the record, the new intel driver 2.2.99.901 brings xvmc support
for 915/945/g33 chipset. 965 is supposed to arrive in the near
 future too.

But it doesn't look like 855 (the one requested in this bug report)
 is supported yet.

I'm a bit lazy to double check, so let's just ask: is that fixed in
current versions already?

Mraw,
KiBi.

2:2.0.0-1 just entered testing actually :) But this one is known to have
multiple bugs on your i855 (especially regarding XV), so I don't expect
you to be very happy with it. 2:2.0.0-5 fixes most of these i855
specific problems, so it would better to test this one directly. If you
ever want to give a quick try, it's available at:

I was very surprised to see it come through last night with a slew of
other updates in testing, so I quickly downloaded everything and began
the task of configuring everything! You're not wrong about the new
driver on the i855, it sucks, I don't use language like that flippantly
:) Performance has dropped considerably to the extent that I can no
longer use compiz and the whole thing feels really sluggish and given
that I'm using an X40 I'm getting hard lock-ups occasionally (although
the BTS shows that is fixed in a later version). Still, I'm hoping to
weather this release out in the knowledge that things *will* improve in
the future as this driver appears to be actively developed!

I tried to set XvMCSurfaces in xorg.conf to 7, however in my
Xorg.0.log I get:

(WW) intel(0): Option XvMCSurfaces is not used

Which is pretty much what I had before the driver change. I thought I'd
email you just to give you some feedback from the field.

Note that 2.1.0 has been released today with lots of fixes for old
chipsets. It will be in unstable tonight (as 2:2.1.0-1).

Performance has dropped considerably to the extent that I can no

About Compiz, you might want to try:
Option AccelMethod EXA
in the Device section of your xorg.conf.

and given that I'm using an X40 I'm getting hard lock-ups occasionally
(although the BTS shows that is fixed in a later version). Still, I'm

The manpage seems to say that it should work. But I don't have any
actual idea whether it is supposed to work today or not. At least
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5329 seems to say it worked
before.

I found the following old upstream bug about XvMC in the i810 driver:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6409
Feel free to add some comments there. I would be good to ping the
upstream developers anyway (you should post your xorg.conf and
Xorg.0.log too). Let me know if you need help.

Hi,

Thanks, Brice

Hi Brice,

Indeed it still doesn't work with the i810 driver and I run a purely
testing environment and currently am not contemplating using packages
from unstable. From all the information I've read about the intel
driver XvMC 'should' work with the adaptor in the X40. I'm happy to
wait for that driver to filter in to testing in the future and test it then.

I would suggest closing this bug (if you've not already done so) and
I'll file a new wish-list bug under the new driver if XvMC doesn't work.

Your bug report is pretty clear, recent, the problem/symptoms did not
change. I'd rather keep it as is.
