Bug#416504: Installation report Compaq LTE5150

2007-03-28 Thread Nikolaus . Gaberszig
Package: installation-reports

Boot method: floppy
Image version: http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-
i/images/daily/floppy/
Date: 19.03.2007 20:00-23:40

Machine: Compaq LTE5150 Laptop
Processor:Intel Pentium
Memory:40MB
Partitions: hda1 710MB
swap 96MB (set up by d-i automatically)

Output of lspci -nn and lspci -vnn:

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot: [O]
Detect network card:[O]
Configure network: [O]
Detect CD: [ ]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Clock/timezone setup: [O]
User/password setup:[O]
Install tasks: [E]
Install boot loader:[O]
Overall install:[E]

Comments/Problems: Network was set up automatically by DHCP
during installation by d-i, but I cannot get the PCMCIA NIC (a NE2000
clone) to work now that the machine boots from HD. I have tried boot
options pci=noapic, acpi =off and pci=nobios but without success :-(

I watched parts of the installation on VT4 and saw that e.g. telnet
was not installed due to a full swap partition (out of memory)

I cannot load the modules pcmcia or pcmcia_core, I can only find the
files pcmcia.ko and pcmcia_core.ko in /lib/modules/$`uname -
r`/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/

As I cannot supply any packets without working LAN connection (no CD-
ROM drive, no USB) I seem to be at a dead end.

A rerun of the d-i failed to resize the partitions (as documented)
but I watched the instllation on vt4 and saw:

not starting inetd

cannot read target /lib/modules/2.6.18-4-486/source
deleting /lib/modules/2.6.18-4-486/source

lots of
obsolete command TITLE Config called
this was with the packets

pkgsel
popularity-contest
x11-common
ucf
fontconfig-config
uswsusp
apmd

a warning
./MAKEDEV do not know how to make device snapshot

and after reboot

detecting PCMCIA bridge type failed, defaulting to i82365

I take it, that is the reason for my not being able to bring up the
PCMCIA-NIC after reboot any more.
can I configure it by hand?
and why does it work nicely with the d-i but not afterwards?

trying sarge again this evening :-(
sarge ran nicely on this machine with the backported kernel 2.6.16
(needed for mppe128)

greetings Nikolaus

PS: I am only sending this because the homepage asked for
installation reports. This is *not* a complaint.

do you select an option in taskel ?
if yes, i think you have to unselect all tasksel options
this will install a minimal system
and after you can add more applications with apt-get command
