this bug is already fixed in the override, which is what really
matters. however the package needs to be updated to match that.

You mean you're changing copyright notices in the debian override for
a package? If a package's copyright claims are badly worded or simply
incorrect, You CANNOT overide this. I find this somewhere inbetween
bad taste and illegal.

I, however agree with the case at hand, so as the maintainer of the
upstream sources, I can change things.

this has nothing to do with copyright at all. the problem is that this
package claims to be in the standard priority of Debian packages,
while the archive is overriding what it says to set it's priority to
optional. the difference is that priority standard packages are
installed by default, while priority optional and lower packages
must be installed by the user. so the package needs to be changed to
optional.
