Bug#420292: xserver-xorg-video-intel: gnome-screensaver blanks screen and does not display dialog after upgrade to 2.0.0-1
David Härdeman wrote: > I have exactly the same problem (that the driver thinks something is > connected to VGA output on my laptop and gnome-screensaver decides to > show its dialogue on the VGA screen). Actually, the reason is that gnome-screensaver is currently buggy when 2 outputs are enabled. It seems to not display the dialogue anywhere, neither on the first nor on the second output. See #420339. Apart from that, your workaround is correct (xrandr --output VGA --off should even be enough). Brice

I have exactly the same problem (that the driver thinks something is connected to VGA output on my laptop and gnome-screensaver decides to show its dialogue on the VGA screen). As a workaround I added this line to xsession: xrandr --output VGA --off --output LVDS --auto And after that gnome-screensaver works again. Might be something to try until the driver is fixed. -- David Härdeman

This monitor detection problem is apparently known upstream. To workaround it, could you try disabling the LVDS output with xrandr --output VGA --off (not sure it will work but we never know...) and see whether gnome-screensaver works fine then? I am pretty sure there's also a bug in gnome-screensaver. It was working fine on my laptop today. However, I just plugged a external VGA monitor and got gnome-screensaver to display a black screen as you described. I have seen the exact same problem yesterday while an external screen was plugged. Today, with only the internal panel, the problem does not occur, gnome-screensaver appears fine. So I was wondering whether it could be related to xrandr 1.2 multiple heads. Do you have an external display or something like that?
