But after I log in ps aux' shows 10 different nm-applets running. Have you run nm-applet manually multiple times? The session manager will restore the session upon login. You can simply kill the nm-applet instances to get rid of them again. Do you still get the AccessDenied error messages from D-Bus? If you have added your user to group netdev and reloaded dbus, this should have gone away and you should see the nm-applet in the systray.
