Bug#443473: modifying [Caps Lock] via xmodmap is broken

We have another bug report (#443044) about xmodmap not working at all,
we don't know what's going wrong yet. There's also
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12500 which looks strange
to me (are you running a 2.6.23-rcX kernel?).

Kernel is 2.6.22.6.

Looking at #443044: This looks pretty much the same. If I comment out
the xmodmap and run it manually within an xterm, then there is no
problem, as for #443044.

I would suggest to merge these two bug reports.

Harri

Bug#443473: modifying [Caps Lock] via xmodmap is broken

2007-09-21 Thread Harald Dunkel

Package: xserver-xorg-input-kbd
Version: 1:1.2.2-3

I have a file .xmodmap saying

remove Lock = Caps_Lock
keycode 0x42 = Return

to switch off the caps lock functionality, and to
convert the [Caps Lock] key into a [Return] key. It
is loaded using

xmodmap .xmodmap

in my .xinitrc file. This worked fine for years up to
Xorg 1.2, but with Xorg 1.3 it stopped working: It
still toggles between lower and upper case characters,
_in addition_ to the expected Return key functionality.
The Caps Lock led stays off.

Would you mind to check? This is a _highly_ annoying
bug, since I got used to the left [Return] key.

Many thanx

Harri

Yes, this problem has been reported several times already, and it's
probably unrelated to your xmodmap problem anyway.

Could you compare the output of xmodmap -pke or so in Xorg 7.2 and 7.3?
If the keymaps are identical, the bug would likely be in the Xserver. If
they are different, the bug would likely be in xmodmap. I would vote for
the former since there are several input-device-related bugs already
known in Xserver 1.4...
