this IMHO means that ALSA is still broken

overall this does not look like an mplayer bug, probably totem is
sending data in a non-blocking fashion

Bug#445731: mplayer stops working after kernel update to 2.6.21

2007-10-13 Thread Sean Zimmermann
I found ALSA stopped working after the kernel upgrade. Any program
that tried to work with alsa (like xmms, totem, or gnome sound)
stalled. I recompiled the drivers and alsa now appears to be working.

However, although alsa is now working, mplayer still has the same
problem (though now it will get a few seconds into the movie and then
stall instead of stalling immediately).

mplayer -ao esd has the same problem (plays for a few seconds, then
stalls).

I tried playing the file with totem, and, though it begins to play
the file correctly, audio cuts out within the first few seconds,
though it continues to play the video.

Here's the output from mplayer -v:

hi

when you boot with the new kernel, does audio work with other applications?

If you use Gnome , can you play sounds in the gnome sound manager ?
may you try with totem ?

if the above works, may you please try again playing your files with mplayer ,
but using the option '-ao esd' ?

thanks

I don't think megabytes of log files are really helpful. I never found
more than a single -v useful.

Bug#445731: mplayer stops working after kernel update to 2.6.21

2007-10-07 Thread Sean
Package: mplayer
Version: 1.0~rc1-16
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hello. I recently attempted to upgrade my system's kernel to the latest
version in testing (2.6.22-2-powerpc) from 2.6.18-4-powerpc.

After updating the kernel, I tried to play a file in mplayer. A player
window appeared, as though the file was going to play, but nothing
happened. Also, the counter was not moving - it was as though the movie
was on pause on a completely black scene. If I tried to seek, the movie
would skip to the frame and show a still image of that point (the
counter would display the time, but still did not move). The program
did not display any error messages and would still quit normally.

I tried using different vo drivers, attempted playing different file
types, and reinstalled the mplayer package, but nothing worked. I
downgraded the kernel back to 2.6.18-4-powerpc and mplayer now works
normally again.
