The same bug still exists with sane-utils 1.0.24-8:

I close this bug from 2007 now:

 - Release 1.0.19~cvs20070730-1 is unsupported
 - no answer for more then 12 weeks

I have tried with 640x480 and 352x288, resulting in exactly the same problems.

xcam also fails to display or capture any image from the Philips
webcam. Upon pressing the 'Play' button, an error message box pops up:
"Failed to start webcam: Invalid argument"

After jumping between the other available devices, upon selecting the
webcam (pwc) device, xcam terminates immediately:
Segmentation fault

Actually as long as you have the v4l comapt layer built into the
kernel (which is the case in debian kernels) you can use any device as
a v4l device IIRC.

So the problem lies in the backend.

Can you give a try to xcam, which is a SANE frontend dedicated to v4l
devices ?

Also, try setting SANE_DEBUG_V4L=255 and see if you can get any useful
error message.

Hmm, the v4l backend does not support v4l2, and I'm not even sure it
handles everything in v4l1.

Can dig a bit further into the issue ? I only have v4l2 devices here...
