Try adding
Option Monitor-LVDS Configured Monitor
to the Device section of your xorg.conf.

The driver seems to be using your monitor section for the VGA output
by default (probably because VGA-0 is first in the list of outputs
supported by your board).

Brice,

Unfortunately, installing the new driver didn't fix the problem. I'm attaching the Xorg.0.log file.

Thanks for all your help,

Brice,

Thanks for the suggestion. Sorry to be a nuisance, but I've never
upgraded to an experimental package before and I have no idea how to do
it. I tried adding this line to my sources.list file:

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ experimental main contrib non-free

(at the bottom) and then doing an apt-get update; that did nothing. I
can't find the experimental version of the driver using dselect. I
can't find any relevant online documentation on how to install
experimental packages either. Can you give me some quick instructions?
I wish the documentaion was more comprehensive.

I am not sure that there is some real documentation for all this,
since we mostly discourage people from using experimental without
a good reason.

Your sources.list should be good. But apt-get must be told explicitly
to install something from experimental, it won't do it by default (or
it could break your whole install).

Try apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati/experimental

Bug#449321: Cannot set screen resolution in xorg.conf using ATI driver

2007-11-05 Thread Michael Vanier
Woo hoo! That did it. It also got rid of an annoying white line at the bottom of my screen that's
been there forever. Thanks so much! I've donated $25 to the Debian project as a token of my gratitude.

Cheers,

Mike

Bug#449321: Cannot set screen resolution in xorg.conf using ATI driver

2007-11-04 Thread Michael Vanier

Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.3+3

I'm running debian unstable, and I upgraded to the latest debian unstable version of X, and now my
preferred screen resolution (1152x768) is ignored in my xorg.conf file. I read some of the blog
posts about how configuration has been simplified, and accordingly I stripped down my xorg.conf file
to a minimal configuration. After hours of trial and error (trying every suggestion I found in the
many related bug reports), I still cannot get X to recognize my preferred resolution -- it always
sets it to the maximum resolution, and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file states that there is no valid
mode, so it picks the default (full resolution, 1680x1050). This is on a Dell Latitute D810 with an
ATI x600 driver. I'm attaching my xorg.conf file and the log file.

Thanks,

Mike

You are not using the RandR 1.2 driver (6.7.19x in experimental). You
are using the old-style driver (6.6.193 from unstable). But the
xorg.conf simplification that you're talking about targets RandR 1.2
drivers only.

So you should upgrade xserver-xorg-video-ati to experimental
(1:6.7.195-2). 6.6.193 is a dead-end anyway, all the work is done in
6.7.19x nowadays.
