Bug#462623: Point 4 is fixed
Андрей Парамонов wrote: 2008/3/21, Eugen Dedu [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi, Ok, so point 1 is fixed too (with newest versions). I think it's not useful to spend time to fix bugs with old versions. Better fix the new versions! Hi! Yes, I think we should leave this until Evince 2.22 is in unstable at least. So it remains point 3. I am working on point 5, my point. A suggestion on point 3 (for whoever will implement it) -- please consider the possibility to get rid of separate menu item and separate window for Print Parameters, and move the functionality into main Print Dialog. See how this is implemented in Gedit for example. A fix for point 5 has been checked in too. From this bug it remains only point 3 to be fixed. I didn't understand your suggestion. gedit 2.22.0-1 has two items in the menu, like evince, isn't it? Cheers, -- Eugen Dedu

2008/3/25, Eugen Dedu [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I didn't understand your suggestion. gedit 2.22.0-1 has two items in the menu, like evince, isn't it? Hi! Huh, just installed new Gedit and it indeed has two separate items, like Evince. Old Gedit used to have page setup inside big print dialog as a separate tab (see screenshot): http://aparamon.msk.ru/ftp/upload/gedit-2.20.4-1-printing.png I don't know why they decided to move the functionality out of the dialog. I assume the reason is it allows to drop some dependencies. Personally I think it is more logical to have a special tab in big print dialog rather than additional dialog and menu item. Well, that's just what I think, and the fact is that the dialog of the new Gedit does save its settings, and the one of Evince doesn't. It would be great if it remembered the settings, too. Андрей Парамонов wrote: 2008/3/21, Eugen Dedu [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi, Thank you for the info. I have a file gs_init.ps. It's in /usr/share/ghostscript/8.62/lib/gs_init.ps and is provided by ghostscript. I saw that 8.56 has it too: /usr/share/gs-gpl/8.56/lib/gs_init.ps However, the new evince depends on libspectre1, which depends on libgs8. It seems that it must depend on ghostscript too. Can you upgrade it please? I have: ii ghostscript 8.62.dfsg.1-2 The GPL Ghostscript PostScript/PDF interpreter -- Eugen Hi Eugen! Thanks for your time and effort! I've installed ghostscript package, and both problems gone. Evince does not crash with new Ghostscript, and printing seems to work fine. But as I have said, sticking to new Ghostscript is not an option for me. For example, on the very document we are debugging, some pages (namely pages 1, 7) are rendered incorrectly. on my system. With older gs-gpl package it works fine. There some other issues too (see for example http://bugs.debian.org/469560). I have reverted back to gs-gpl package. By the way, I actually do have gs_init.ps file, but it is in /usr/share/gs-gpl/8.56/lib/. I don't know if I should submit a bug against experimental package (regarding crash). I hope stable version of Evince 2.22 will work nicely with gs-gpl. If submitting a bug against current experimental evince will help, I will do so. Regarding print preview bug, could you uninstall ghostscript, install gs-gpl and test it in such a setup? Hi, Ok, so point 1 is fixed too (with newest versions). I think it's not useful to spend time to fix bugs with old versions. Better fix the new versions! I imagine that ghostscript will fix the bug later. I propose you to report a bug 2 months later (for ex.), when regression bugs in ghostscript are fixed. So it remains point 3. I am working on point 5, my point. -- Eugen

For point 1, there is a known bug that evince does not actually print if it is closed before the printing job is created. Is this bug which affects you? I don't think it's exactly this bug. In my case, even Print Preview doesn't show up, no matter how long I wait. Hi, Happy to say that the 2nd point is fixed too in trunk (see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=365332). For the 1st point, can you find a reproducible method to trigger the bug? I have printed and I haven't seen your bug. Also, are you willing to compile yourself evince and add a few printf to see where the bug comes from? (I do not know if I must put the forward control BTS command, sorry.) Cheers, -- Eugen Dedu
