What packages would be required for proper support for it?

Discussing with Debian contributor it seems that the openoffice.org-gome
must also be added:
- if you don't then blind persons will get an inaccessible error message
when trying to use the OOo suite
- while sighted don't know that problem because they don't need
accessibility tools to be active at taht moment.

so if providing an Desktop assistive Technology entry in the tasksel menu,
then you should not only provide gnome-orca and brltty-x11 (and deps) but
also the openoffice.org-gnome integrator (if not provided by the Desktop
candidate in tasksel)

Only gnome-orca and its dependences; it seems to install itself espeak and
so the couple orca (screen reader) + espeak (multilingual speech synthesis)
will be installed.
For braille, brltty is already installed if for example you entered at the
CD boot: prompt a line like brltty=bb,dd,tt (where bb = braille display, dd
the device, tt the brailel table).

There exist a package called brltty-x11 but this isn't mandatory to be
installed for the correct working of orca+espeak.

Another thing, there's any specific language packages that provide
support for other langues then English?

Well, that's the fantastic way the espeak package have been built; it
contains lots of languages, these may be changed at the 1st startup of Orca
from the Gnome environment (alt+f2 orca enter).

 Cheers,
Ciao.

It would still be helpful to install it.

Bug#516723: wishlist: adding Desktop Screen Reader to the tasksel menu

2009-02-23 Thread Osvaldo La Rosa
Package: tasksel
Version: 2.78
Severity: wishlist

Hello team,

it would be nice to provide near the other offers inside the tasksel menu an
entry that you may call
Desktop Screen Reader
or
Desktop Assistive Technology
who will mark the gnome-orca to be installed to during the install process.

Since this would be optional, even as mysql or webserver etc are optional
too (not installed / marked by every user) this may not cause dammage to
sighted persons for now, while it may be useful for blind persons to know
that Orca+Espeak is there as well as Gnome itself.

This may also help sighted persons from LUGs, teachers, friends aso who need
to help a sighted person while they don't know what exactly must be added
herefore.

This will also complete a little bit the brltty support who is already
present now on the D-I.

Please do provide this entry if posible.
