FWIW, I am working on a new package version (today's upstream), which
will be updated probably tomorrow after I will have tested it. Please
confirm that this bug is present with the new version as well.

Confirmed! Stilled present in version 4.0-20090301-1.

Bug#517434: [Foo2zjs-maintainer] Bug#517434: foo2zjs: HP LasetJet 1018 won't print

2009-03-01 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

On Fri, 27 Feb 2009 19:37:23 +0100, Andrey wrote:
 Severity: grave

According to the Severity: definition [1], I would consider this bug not
a grave one, but an important instead, since ATM it seems to affect only
printers from the HP LaserJet 10xx series. I would downgrade it in a
week if no one complains before.

Printing to my HP LaserJet 1018 used to work, but now it doesn't. I'm
not sure why, because I don't remember myself playing with printer
 config recently.

Which packages were upgraded just before the printer stopped?

I know that my printer needs proprietary firmware, and I'm pretty sure
it gets uploaded to the printer when it's connected. I get the
 following diagnostics in my /var/log/messages:
[...]
 Feb 27 20:59:09 neo /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: loading HP LaserJet 1018
 firmware /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1018.dl to /dev/usb/lp0 ...
 Feb 27 20:59:09 neo /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: ... download successful.

Have you upgraded the foo2zjs package itself in the while? In this
case, this could be related to bug #477923 [2], even if the firmware is
correctly loaded.

Then, when I try to print anything, foo2zjs and foomatic-rip processes
spawn, but nothing gets printed. I've been waiting for the processes
to terminate for at least 30 minutes, but to no avail. I get the
 following diagnostics in my /var/log/messages:

 Feb 27 21:16:05 neo foo2zjs-wrapper: foo2zjs-wrapper -P -z1 -L0 -r1200x600
 -p9 -s7 -m1 -n1

Are there any other messages in /var/log/syslog* or /var/log/cups/*?

Please tell me how should I debug further. It really important for me
 to get printing back.

The major problem is that I do not have an HP LaserJet 1018 nor a 1020
one. I bcc:ed some people I know have either such printers or other
models affected by bug #477923 [2], just to confirm your problem and
maybe get more hint on the causes.

FWIW, I am working on a new package version (today's upstream), which
will be updated probably tomorrow after I will have tested it. Please
confirm that this bug is present with the new version as well.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca
