When I tried to purge the package, I got <quote>

Made no ifference to an attempt to purge but - thankfully - did make
it possible to install, so my problem is solved, at least - thank you.

It does sound that way: if a package contains a mistake (missing
Python-Version line), python-central turns it into a problem that
completely blocks aptitude from doing anything useful (specifically
including backing out of the mistake) until - and I trust this is
anathema to everyone - someone intervenes manually to edit an internal
config file of dpkg ...
