It is now available at

   http://git.debian.org/?p=collab-maint/notmuch.git;a=summary

The branch layout is (attempted to be) described in
debian/README.source

I suppose at minimum debian/copyright needs some love.

 My question is: is there any progress? I'd love to have notmuch in
 a Debian-package by the time LCA starts.

There has been lots of activity upstream. There a couple of pretty
important usability issues that should be addressed soon: in particular
handling renames and deletes of mail messages, and a pernicious (for
notmuch) performance bug in xapian.

There is preliminary debian packaging of a git snapshot at
http://pivot.cs.unb.ca/git/?p=notmuch.git;a=summary

If either of you wants to take that and run with it, feel free.
There is not much too it, really.

@Carl: if you can, take a shot. I'd be happy to sit down at LCA with
you and work through the package to clean up any problems, although
I am sure you won't leave any.

Bug#557354: RFP: notmuchmail -- tag and search based email with CLI interface and Emacs front end

2009-11-21 Thread David Bremner
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: notmuchmail
  Version : pre-release
  Upstream Author : Carl Worth cwo...@example.org
* URL : http://notmuchmail.org/
* License : GPL3
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : tag and search based email with CLI interface and Emacs
front end

From the web site:

Notmuch is an answer to Sup. Sup is a very good email program written
by William Morgan (and others) and is the direct inspiration for
Notmuch. Notmuch began as an effort to rewrite performance-critical
pieces of Sup in C rather than ruby. From there, it grew into a
separate project. One significant contribution Notmuch makes compared
to Sup is the separation of the indexer/searcher from the user
interface. (Notmuch provides a library interface so that its
indexing/searching/tagging features can be integrated into any email
program.)

Comments:

There hasn't been a formal release yet, but things are moving quickly.
I'm filing this bug to coordinate Debian packaging efforts. I will
probably do some half-baked job just for my own use.
