There's a mailing list of release announcements:

There is also the sylpheed-announce ML (sylpheed-annou...@sraoss.jp)
which deals only with release announcements.

I suppose this has been added after the bug got reported. In any case
now you can disable it in configure, since I think makes little sense
in Debian, and close the bug.

Best regards,
José Luis

Err... thanks, but would be less work to do the edit by hand *grin*

To me removing the option for checking is like self-cheating and
trusting the Debian version is always the latest.
As a user why should I trust the debian maintainer about that? :)
And as the debian maintainer I'd like to be notified by the users if
I miss some release [0], so really don't see the point of removing
  the option.

  regards,

[0] Already know the watch file would warn of this on PTS, but that
resource not usually checked by users, a menu option is more quick.

Bug#563096: sylpheed: Hide update menu item

2009-12-30 Thread Andreas Ronnquist
Package: sylpheed
Version: 3.0.0~beta4-1
Severity: wishlist

I emailed the sylpheed mailinglist, requesting a configure option to
hide/show the update menu item - Since one should update sylpheed
through the package manager, I believe the update menu item should be
hidden in the debian package.

The configure option is availible in Sylpheed SVN version r2407, see
messages in sylpheed mailinglist backlog here:
