Does the problem still occur with latest xserver and driver from
unstable?
Can you try radeon from experimenta, and maybe KMS too?

Hi, thanks for the prompt response. The problem is that kdm didn't start 
up - I was left staring at the login: prompt on vt1 and vt7 was blank.


Are there any other logging options I should look?
