That would be xdg-open, since sensible-browser doesn’t do that (arguably that’s a bug in sensible-browser). Cheers, -- .''`. Uhh, you're the one who brought up macs and alleged corporate oppression to begin with. I'm just pointing out that it works both ways. I care about system-wide defaults because I use other applications that cannot be expected to integrate with GConf (like alpine, or K applications, or whatever.) I guess I am looking for package galternatives. ... back away slowly... Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? If you are the only person to use your computer, what shit do you give about system-wide defaults? If you want to do administrative tasks, you can use administration tools. Like update-alternatives, or gconf-editor if you want to change the same setting. Or sabayon even, if you want to use the gnome-control-center interface itself to set system-wide defaults. -- .''`. However, in Debian, it might not make sense to then block other applications that are not native to macs. I don't think your preference for one operating system (that is not Debian) should prevent you from creating a system control panel that sets preferences for other prior apps not from that system. Since Debian is open to ports from other architectures, and legacy terminal applications (alpine, in my case), I'm not sure you can expect all the developers of those different markets to conform to a minority market standard. It sounds a lot like Microsoft... or a microsoft wannabe who resells stuff that is already free. I am just suggesting, since I am the only person who uses my computer, it would be nice to have a checkbox to apply the same choices to the system by running update-alternatives with gksu. As an average user, I was confused why changing the system preferences didn't change the system preferences. Epiphany advertises itself just like Safari, so those blocking it are also blocking macs. -- .''`. Bug#583294: gnome-control-center: gnome-default-applications-properties should update-alternatives?
Package: gnome-control-center Version: 1:2.30.1-1 Severity: normal Maybe this is a wishlist item... is it supposed to update-alternatives? I change my preferred browser to Iceweasel, but: hed...@maggie:~$ locate www-browser | grep etc | grep -v gz | xargs ls -lah lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Dec 9 16:37 /etc/alternatives/gnome-www-browser -> /usr/bin/epiphany-browser lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Nov 18 2009 /etc/alternatives/www-browser -> /usr/bin/w3m lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Feb 25 23:46 /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser -> /usr/bin/epiphany-browser So a lot of programs still run epiphany when I click links. Epiphany is cool but I'm not ready to switch, and it's often blocked because it is not "a supported browser." If it is not supposed to work that way and broken, could there be a checkbox to sync /etc/alternatives with gksu?
