See the same bug on launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/consolekit/+bug/483130 Temporary upgrade-friendly fix is in comment 16. It fixes launching session with startx, and does not break session launched with Lightdm. Although, I remember some time ago it broke sessions launched with GDM. I do not know if it is true now, haven't used GDM for a long time.
