2.6.0-3's prerm looks fine to me, so I don't know what happened there.
If you can reproduce with set -x in the script that would probably help.
If not, there's probably not much to do since that seems fixed in later
versions.

I've finished upgrading that system at this point.  If I run into it
again on another upgrade I can try that; otherwise it'll probably
require building and upgrading a system with debootstrap.
