A brief follow-up: Mike Hommey pointed out on IRC that this issue is probably the same as https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=629114 and that a workaround is disabling GNOME accessibility features.
Which indeed seem to work in my case (my desktop is icewm, but there are probably enough gnome-based programs running). Running gnome-control-center manually did the trick.
