This is great!
I already had myspell-en-us, due to other packages depending on it.
After installing

 * myspell-it
 * myspell-en-gb

I finally have a working spell checker for US English, IT Italian, and
UK English!

I still cannot understand why installing myspell-it didn't help back on
April, when I reported the bug.
But now it seems to work!:-)

Thanks a lot for helping me!

 Unfortunately there is no package hunspell-it available for Debian yet.

What would it be useful for?
Is myspell-it not enough?

 Err. if you had it installed once, a apt-get install myspell-it shouldn't
 have done anything here.

No, no, please let me clarify here.
I actually installed it today, as aptitude's output confirmed.

 So either you haven't got it installed (or removed it)
 or you say something untrue..

I tried it back on April, before filing the bug report.
Since it didn't seem to help, I thought it was unrelated with my bug,
and purged it.

  But now it seems to work!:-)

 Good, so I guess we can close it.

Sure!
And thanks a lot for following up.

 Grüße/Regards,

Bye, and thanks again.

Hello Francesco,

you will have to download an extension from
http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center/italian-dictionary-thesaurus-hyphenation-patterns

A link to the installation instructions is supplied.

Best regards

 Hello Francesco,

Hi Xypron,
thanks for your reply (which, however, I don't fully understand).

Huh?!?
I thought those extensions were included in the following Debian
packages that I *do* have on my system:

$ dpkg -l | egrep 'hyphen-it|mythes-it' | cut -c 1-60
ii  hyphen-it1:3.3.0-3
ii  mythes-it2.0.7.gh.deb1-3

Could you please explain why I should manually install additional
extensions that are not included in Debian?

Please let me understand.
Thanks for your time!

Bug#623000: libreoffice-writer: spell checking fails to work in Italian (Italy) and maybe in other languages

2011-04-16 Thread Francesco Poli (wintermute)
Package: libreoffice-writer
Version: 1:3.3.2-2+b1
Severity: normal

Hi!
Thanks for maintaining LibreOffice in Debian.

I have the following packages installed (along with their dependencies):

  * libreoffice
  * libreoffice-l10n-it
  * hyphen-en-us
  * mythes-en-us
  * hyphen-it
  * mythes-it

No special configuration tweaking was done.

I start libreoffice-writer:

  $ lowriter

and write some stuff in US English; spell checking seems to work
correctly: as soon as I write a word the wrong way, it is underlined
in a red wavy line, and I can right-click on it to get suggestions
and other spell checking related options.
OK, let's quit and start over.

Once again, I start libreoffice-writer:

  $ lowriter

and write some stuff in Italian; spell checking underlines almost
all words, since they are not valid US English. OK, let's change
the language from English (USA) to Italian (Italy): I choose this
language from Tools - Language - For all Text.
Language is now set to Italian (Italy) for the entire document,
it seems, and I no longer see any word underlined in red.
Wait, not even wrongly written words are underlined!
I tried to click on the AutoSpellCheck button on the tool bar,
with no visible effect.

I am not able to get spell checking to work for me
in Italian (Italy).

It's possible that other languages (different from English (USA))
have the same issue: I tried to install other packages
(libreoffice-l10n-en-gb and myspell-en-gb) in order to get
English (UK) spell checking, with no success, unfortunately.
Also, installing myspell-it does not seem to help.

I seem to remember that I had the same problem with
openoffice.org, but now, with libreoffice, I think that
I really have to solve it once and for all...

Please help!
What's wrong with my installation?
What did I fail to understand?

Thanks for your time!
