Bug#623062: terminator: High memory usage

2016-11-27 Thread Egmont Koblinger
Hi,

FYI: Approximate memory usage (RSS) for me right after starting up the apps
is:

gnome-terminal, xfce4-terminal, mate-terminal: 35 MB
terminator: 55 MB
terminix: 60 MB

I'm on Ubuntu Yakkety, some of these apps are from Zesty beta or manually
compiled, all of them using Gtk+-3 and corresponding libvte-2.91. (In the
original report, and probably in the followup comments too they were
probably based on Gtk+-2 and libvte9.)

I don't know where these large numbers come from, but I can easily imagine
Gtk+ itself (with all the things it's doing under the hood, e.g. I guess it
caches the font, etc.) bringing in perhaps a good 30 or so megs (hey, an
empty gedit consumes 44 MB for me), and perpahs the Python overhead
(including its automatic deferred GC) is yet another 20 M. Dunno.

VTE is expected to consume somewhere around up to maybe 0.5 MB - 1 MB per
widget once you actually start using it (that is, once you produce a nice
amount of output, not just the initial shell prompt and a few lines). That
is, it's negligible here.

cheers,
egmont

Bug#623062: terminator: High memory usage

2011-04-16 Thread Chris
Package: terminator
Version: 0.95-1
Severity: normal

Hi!

On my debian testing installation, the terminator process started with 1
tab and without fullscreene uses about 130MB of my memory. A friend of
mine uses arch linux, at this system terminator uses about 20MB of the
memory. I don't know how to debug or start to search for this problem.
Is this a debian or a terminator specific problem?

Thanks in advance for a reply.
