Bug#632985: #632985: gnome-panel do not load

2011-07-17 Thread François LEIBER
Thanks Luca, I had exactly the same symptoms after an update yesterday
(no panel and impossible to kill it, system so busy everything was
unusable), but using gconf-editor and removing the transparency fixed it.

Indeed, if everyone with a transparent panel find themselves with such a
unusable system, I think the severity of this bug should be raised.

Cheers,

François

Bug#632985: #632985: gnome-panel do not load

2011-07-17 Thread Martin Knopp
Downgrading libgtk2.0-0 to 2.24.4-3 fixed the problem on my machines. To
stop aptitude from complaining about broken dependencies, I also
downgraded

gtk2-engines-pixbuf
libgail18
libgail-common
libgtk2.0-bin
libgtk2.0-dev

to their 2.24.4-3 versions.

Regards,

Martin

Bug#632985: #632985: gnome-panel do not load

2011-07-16 Thread Bastien

I'm experiencing the same issue, after an upgrade yesterday and a reboot.

I get the same Gdk-WARNING, but I can't manage to find the Gtk-WARNING.
Are you talking about gnome-panel's property dialog ? Then I can't open
it, since I couldn't get gnome-panel to work again.

Changing the gconf properties didn't work for me. I tried setting
opacity to 65535 (it was 6000 before that, though my panel wasn't
transparent), and the type is set to gtk (I tried setting it to color
without success).

Best regards, Bastien.

Bug#632985: #632985: gnome-panel do not load

2011-07-15 Thread Luca Bruno
I think I've encountered the same bug, so here are some details.

Please explain your problem in more detail.
Did it happen after an upgrade?

I've stumbled on it after yesterday sid dist-upgrade.
A snippet of dpkg.log for that is attached.

Do you get any related error messages in ~/.xsession-errors?

(gnome-panel:5802): Gdk-WARNING
**:
/build/buildd-gtk+2.0_2.24.5-2-amd64-N7Pg6p/gtk+2.0-2.24.5/gdk/x11/gdkdrawable-x11.c:952
drawable is not a pixmap or window

Upon every start. This also happens when no trasparency or background
images are set. I suspect this is due to some icon, maybe.

 Any other error messages?

When opening the property dialog, I get

(gnome-panel:5802): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to get constuct only
property adjustment of opacity_scale with value `adjustment1'

and the trasparency slider is unusable.

Do you have you gnome-panel set to transparent?

Yes, at least in my case. That seems to be cause that won't let
gnome-panel load.

 Maybe it's duplicate of #633573

It seems so, as the CPU was also completely busy behind gnome-panel and
applets.

What's different in this bug, though, is that the panel won't even
appear. So you get a overloaded machine and a non-working DE, ie. the
system is unusable.
It may be worthy raising the severity of this bug, to avoid leaving
other users with a broken desktop.

As a workaround, I had to
change /apps/panel/toplevels/bottom_panel_screen0/background type and
opacity manually, via gconf-editor, in order to get back to an usable
state.

Cheers, Luca
