I should have mentioned that getting a readable backtrace requires installing the mutt-dbg package. The output from strace is in the attached file. Thanks. Bug#636395: mutt: freezes at Sorting mailbox...
* Jonathan Nieder jrnie...@gmail.com [05-08-2011 02:25 EEST]: Ah, sorry for the trouble. I should have mentioned that getting a readable backtrace requires installing the mutt-dbg package. No problem. I don't know why I didn't notice the dbg package earlier. The backtrace helped me to see what part of my config was causing it to hang: alternative_order text/enriched text/plain text/html auto_view text/html I noticed that, for some reason, I didn't have links installed. I installed that and added the following to .mutt/mailcap: text/html; links %s; nametemplate=%s.html text/html; links -dump %s; nametemplate=%s.html; copiousoutput After doing this, mutt is much, much better (it moves past Sorting mailbox... but it pauses briefly (a second or two) when moving down to another screenful of messages. In case it's of use I'm attaching the gdb output with the mutt-dbg package installed. (I'm sorry for the useless bt earlier).
