i think the arguing is as follows:
- for whatever reasons gem has been a recommends to puredata for ages
- after splitting out puredata-core,..., installing puredata should
still give you exactly the same user experience than before.
- anybody advanced enough to install puredata-core rather than
puredata would have the knowlegde to tell their package manager to not
install recommended package if they do wish so (apt-get  install
--no-install-recommends puredata-core)

having said that, i think it's a good idea to move the recommends from
puredata-core to puredata.
