Bug#656899: mdadm: sending ioctl 1261 to a partition warnings in kernel log (Re: may go back to lenny)

Hi Vincent,

[Subject: Bug#656899: may go back to lenny]

Please keep in mind that these appear as emails in a crowded
inbox, so the subject line can be a good place to put valuable
context.

I am seeing those messages on a lenny system running 2.6.26.

Yes, as the list of affected versions at
http://bugs.debian.org/656899 indicates, the patch introducing this
problem is part of 2.6.26-29 indeed.

Thanks for writing,
Jonathan

and I am currently running Debian stable with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 and

I have two 2TB drives in raid1 but I don't use LVM.

Bug#656899: mdadm: sending ioctl 1261 to a partition warnings

2012-03-24 Thread Tim Woodall

I'm also seeing this problem. I can trigger these errors trivially by
doing:

/sbin/lvcreate -A n -L500M -s -nvar-backup /dev/vg0/var

and

/sbin/lvremove -A n -f /dev/vg0/var-backup

Seeing lots of these two errors:

Additionally, the lvremove doesn't actually work first time if the
previous snapshot that was made was not of the same partition. I have
no idea if that is related but I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

I first saw the lvremove problem on Feb 1st. mdadm and linux-image were
updated on 29th Jan but I didn't reboot until 4th Feb

From kern.log backed up on morning of 5th Feb:

That doesn't look good, but it may be unrelated. Can you explain
how the RAID and LVM are configured? Is /boot within an LV?

Rik's original report is describing symptoms with known cause (mdadm
needs adjusting to send its ioctls to the entire block device, and the
kernel needs to be more tolerant of known cases of partition abuse in
userspace as they are discovered), so reopening.

Jan, if you want to pursue a fix to the freeze you found (as opposed
to the sending ioctl num to a partition! warnings), please file a
new bug.

Thanks and sorry for the fuss,

This warning was introduced as part of the fix for CVE-2011-4127. (But
it was not present in the preliminary fix used in 2.6.32-39squeeze1.)

This is correct, the message is recent addition in
 block/scsi_ioctl.c.

1261 appears to be BLKFLSBUF, -- I'm not sure why it
is not allowed for a partition anymore, and why it
 gets routed to scsi_ioctl.c.
Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores)

Which kernel package version is that, exactly?

 This is

which is based on the upstream 3.2.1 kernel.

So the package version is 3.2.1-1.

This is a (upstream) kernel bug, see https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/1/24/136

Reassigning.

[ 368.892442] mdadm: sending ioctl 1261 to a partition!

The upgrade included updates for mdadm and the linux kernel.

The updates installed linux kernel 3.2, which I assume is triggering this.
Recently there was a security issue with ioctls sent to partitions being
forwarded to the whole disk. I assume the 3.2 kernel has a fix for this and
this is causing the messages.

So far the systems seems to work correctly.

Regards,

Rik
