Bug#670800: [NMU] latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab: Helping to update to Copyright format 1.0

2012-05-10 Thread Jari Aalto
I'm planning to NMU with changes listed in previous mail's patch to help
migrate away from deprecated dpatch.

Please let me know if an update is alredy being worked on, or if the
previous patch needs adjustments, or if there is anything that should
delay the NMU.

Although I appreciate your work on that, what on *earth* are you planning?

Can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read the
developers reference, 5.11.1. When and how to do an NMU
There is clearly stated:
Does your NMU really fix bugs? Fixing cosmetic issues or changing the
packaging style in NMUs is discouraged.

All the changes you propose are cosmetic and nothing else.

May I dissect your great patch and esp. changelog:
+ * Update to debhelper to 9.
+ * debian/compat
+- Update to 9.

Ok, change 7 - 9, well

+ * debian/copyright
+- Migrate to Copyright Format 1.0.

cosmetic. and maintainers *might* prefer *not* to use that format.

+ * debian/patches:
+- Add DEP-3 headers.
+- Change to standard *.patch suffix and (-) in file names.

renaming and eliminating of white space?

+ * debian/rules:
+- Replace deprecated dh_prep and use dh_prep.

first dh_clean - dh_prep, secondly the command was not called:
-# dh_clean -k
+# dh_prep

Please let me know if an update is alredy being worked on, or if the
previous patch needs adjustments, or if there is anything that should
 delay the NMU.

Thanks for your work, and Danai *might* include your copyright
change in one of the future versions, but this is *SOLELY* up to
him as main maintainer of the package.

Bottom line: I *STRONGLY* oppose this NMU, there is NO reason to do it.

Unrelated question: What is the reason to do that? Do you want to
see your name in the copyright file???

Best wishes

Norbert

DIDCOT (n.)
The tiny oddly-shaped bit of card which a ticket inspector cuts out of
a ticket with his clipper for no apparent reason. It is a little-known
fact that the confetti at Princess Margaret's wedding was made up of
thousands of didcots collected by inspectors on the Royal
Train. DIDLING (participial vb.)
The process of trying to work out who did it when reading a whodunnit,
and trying to keep your options open so that when you find out you can
allow yourself to think that you knew perfectly well who it was all
along.

There is a motivation to help moving to the newer packaging format:

  - The E: error reported by Lintian for the use of deprecated dpatch
  - Simplicity of patching system (reducing depends, standards quilt
interface etc.)

| Thanks for your work, and Danai *might* include your copyright

I did not notice that latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab had had recent
uploads. The information I had written down previously was that the
package's last upload was from 2009; based on this, the message about
intent to NMU was sent. It's good to see that the package is back in
maintenance.

The background is that the original developer of dpatch let go the
package and it was orphaned long time during 2009...2011 having no
maintainer at all. It was understandable: not sensible to mantain
parallel project to quilt().
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=562697.

Dpatch is currently being overseen only due to historical reasons and
the current maintainer wishes packages to migrate away from it; hence
the Lintian (E:) error for packages that are still using it.

I hope that you consider new formats; The benefit of e.g. Copyright
Format 1.0 is to help machine processing and License auditing work.

Thank you for the comments against the patch. I'm happy to revise it
for later package versions if needed.

Jari

Wrong, this was fixed in 0.20050817-16 by moving to quilt.

Hi Jari

It is already updated in the SVN repository. This bug will therefore
be closed with a next upload, but I do not know yet when exactly that
will happen.
Thank you for your support!

Cheers
