Bug#683982: [Cupt-devel] Bug#683982: cupt: show should remove dots of blank lines when printing descriptions

Dots are natural parts of the long description, and I'm not aware of any software doing this. Do you have any use case why they should be better removed? aptitude show removes them. IMO, dots are an artifact to glue description paragraphs together, because of requirements of the syntax of the files. What would happen if it was decided to have 1-line descriptions, and substitute new lines with the character |? Descriptions wouldn't be very readable. Of course, these dots don't have the same nasty effect on readability, but in my opinion they are not part of the description itself but of the formatting, and thus they should be removed in user-oriented operations. Of course, all of this is pretty low priority, consider ignoring it if you don't think that it should be changed. Additionally, perhaps the Errors and Warnings should be printed to stderr, so my command above would work as intended :-) They are, your redirection was attached to grep, not cupt. Oh dear. Undesired effects when sending bug reports 2 hours after should-go-to-bed time, sorry for that. Cheers. -- Manuel A. severity 683982 wishlist quit Hi Manuel, On 2012-08-06 00:44, Manuel A. Fernandez Montecelo wrote: I think that the dots should be removed. Hm, I am not sure about this. And if I understand the intention of the Errors and Warnings, I think that there should be only a Warning instead of an Error in the first line telling that the program is using not fully up-to-date files (and not the others). The rest is superfluous for a normal user and common operations, IMO. This is an error by default for security reasons to prevent [replay attacks][1] against indexes. You can switch that off using the option 'cupt::cache::release-file-expiration::ignore'. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_attack -- Eugene V.
