I don't know what can or can't be done in freeze, but I've been using GNU Parallel for quite a while (thanks for this great tool!) and recently tried to use it on debian... Well, I've got too say I'm rather unhappy at how long it took me to finally figure it was "just" a configuration file somewhere added for legacy. I probably would never have found about it without the bugs in here, actually. I'd much rather have a big fat conflict with clear package names than spending hours finding out that this bug was actually a feature. It's not the first time two packages provide programs with the same names, and people can live with either or manually install one in the very unlikely case they need both. To be really, really honest, *I* myself, am not really interested in the
--tollef thing being set as the default here in Debian, but that was a
compromise that had to be made to get GNU parallel in Debian.
I know that this has escalated up to the technical committee (which I think
was going to extremes), but I would love to kill this with a "Conflicts:"
and be done with this situation with moreutils and put big fat warnings in
the package description (or in some other documentation) about what one
should do to get both GNU parallel and moreutils installed.
IMVHO, this "technical" problem is actually getting to be a social problem:
it's not that the packages can't be coinstallable, but that the author's
opinions won't probably change, that's actually a "conflict". (*)
I may be skimming too fast the Debian Policy, but since it states in section
7.4 that (among other things):

|when two packages provide the same file and will continue to do so,

and there's an impasse here, perhaps a new upload should be made to settle
this, at least temporarily, with some proper documentation.
I simply don't want to "fight" and, for that reason, I am willing to adopt a
less-than-perfect measure that can (even if bluntly) workaround the social
problems here.

Package: parallel Version: 20120422-1 Severity: serious Thanks for packaging parallel, which looks quite handy. On the parallel list, I had a long-ish exchange with Ole about something (mostly me not understanding awk semantics ;-) but it also lead to me complaining that his example don't work ... which it turns out is due to the package installing the (very non-standard) option --tollef in /etc/parallel/config. Ole strongly suggests not to. I think he is right. Could this be undone? He also has a new stable release 20120822.
