A patch was proposed upstream [1], and I've confirmed it fixes the problem for me (once the patch proposed to fix #747465 is applied too, otherwise notification-daemon crashes before it has the chance to expose this other kind of buggy behavior). If any of the maintainers, or anyone else more versed than me in C/Glib code, was kind enough to have a look at that patch to check it doesn't do anything scary, I would be glad to NMU with these two patches (for #747465 and #693837) applied.
