There were two issues:

1. The missing "Style * IconTitleFormat %i", which was useless before
fvwm 2.6.

2. So, "Style * IconTitleFormat %i" is needed, but there were still
problems with some windows at their creation. This problem is fixed
in fvwm 2.6.6. I hope Debian will upgrade. In the mean time, I've
found the fix in the Git repository thanks to "git bisect":

commit e3a5c5f6745448d75d284b6983bfeb8df6ca1ffb
Author: dane
Date: Sat Nov 9 17:20:49 2013 +

* fvwm/events.c (HandlePropertyNotify): Disable prior fix suspected of
causing
problems.

I've attached the corresponding patch.

Yes, but with this and "Style * IconTitleFormat %i" (which is needed
with fvwm 2.6.*), I can't reproduce the bug. With the escape sequence,
it sometimes works for some window, but in most cases, it doesn't.

Note: I have not tried 2.6.6 (where this bug is claimed to be fixed),
but I cannot reproduce the bug with the current version from Git.

That would be cool - I pinned fvwm at the wheezy version for the time
being. Having a newer version would be charming.

I thought that there could be a backport for 2.6.5 (which is what
Debian is using). Because of this bug, I'm still using an old fvwm

This looks as though it was "fixed" by being commented out. Note that
this is not desirable and as the person who seems to have introduced
the bug, I might look into it at some point in the future.

What is it you're expecting in terms of confirmation? It'll be in the
next FVWM release whenever that is.

Yes, please let us know how that works out.
I'll revert the patch in 2.6.6 if it turns out to be the culprit.

Just on a hunch, you might want to try this version:

   ftp://ftp.fvwm.org/pub/fvwm/version-2/fvwm-2.6.3.tar.gz

A patch was added in 2.6.4 that seems really suspicious to me. For my own

because it's been causing segfaults for me.

Ok, doing some tests it seems that the logic of setting window/icon names
in fvwm is broken. The behavior depends on the ability of the client to do
set UTF8-properties, but it is broken in any case. Tests follow:

created with

  xterm -n my_icon -T my_title

(or rxvt or others), when iconized, shows "my_title" as the name of
the icon. (In 1:2.6.5.ds-2; ok in 2.5.x.)
