Bug#704987: gnome-shell: scrolling in libreoffice-writer freezes system
I can confirm that with kernel version 3.2.0-51 the bug seems to be fixed. No more freezes nor lags. Thanks a lot signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Bug#704987: gnome-shell: scrolling in libreoffice-writer freezes system
Hello guys, I experienced the freeze only during scrolling through LibreOffice documents using the touchpad, and not in documents I wrote myself. I got a rtf file, with which I could reproduce the freeze within seconds. I could only move the pointer, but the system did not respond, and I could not switch with ctrl-alt-F1 to a console. Magic sysrq worked to reboot the system. Today I rebuild the kernel with the suggested patch and could not reproduce the freeze. I tested various LibreOffice files, the mentioned rtf-file, and I did suspend and resume. Thanks to you all for finding this. I did install experimental packages as I got other X-crashes, too: * xserver-xorg-video-intel: did not change anything * linux-image-3.8-trunk-amd64: seems to solve the problems but I need some more testing. The major concern I have, that it did work much better with some crashes per month but now it reproducibly crashes ten times a day. For me this is a regression. No, see http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-bugs.html#s9.1.2 I see. So it is up to the kernel team to decide which hardware is new and which not ? Are there any guidelines, introduced ~ one year before freeze ? If we were to treat every crash/hang as 'data loss' and hence grave then we would have a few hundred RC bugs and would never release Debian again. Or it would be really outdated. control: reassign -1 src:linux Reassigning to the kernel since this seems to be an issue with the intel driver. There is also the evidence that this is fixed in at least linux 3.8. It would be helpful if someone experiencing this could bisect patches intel-related kernel patches to figure out which commits fix this. They probably landed somewhere in 3.5 or 3.6. Bug#704987: gnome-shell: scrolling in libreoffice-writer freezes system
I can confirm the problem on a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz in LibreOffice 4. Replace the graphic card by a nvidia (with nvidia-glx) has solved the problem.

I had a similar problem (using a thinkpad x220). Upgrading to the 3.8 kernel (linux-image-3.8-...) fixed this issue for me. I already asked the maintainer to update the Intel Xorg drivers for Wheezy months ago, but the freeze was there already and he personally didn't see any instability.. Try this one from Experimental you most probably won't have any issues after that: http://packages.qa.debian.org/x/xserver-xorg-video-intel.html Also try the Linux 3.5 kernel or newer. Then you will have a very stable setup for a Sandy Bridge chip. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#704987: gnome-shell: scrolling in libreoffice-writer freezes system
Package: gnome-shell Version: 3.4.2-7 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Dear Maintainer, I am not sure if this bug belongs to X or gnome 3. It is #673895 which was closed and similar to #673942. Scrolling in libreoffice-writer 100% totally freezes X / the system. Sometimes it gets back only to crash for good after more scolling. The document does not matter. The mouse pointer still reacts but nothing more. Ctrl-Alt-Print-k kills the xserver but gdm3 does not start anymore. Ctrl-Alt-F? do not work, only Kernel-Magic-Keys work. Using gnome-fallback libreoffice-writer works without a problem. This happens on a different machine with an intel onboard graphic card. Sorry, I do not have access right now, but I try to supply more info the next days. What is need ? I am also not sure for how long this bug already exists as we are in the process switching to tex and libreoffice is not used that often anymore.
