Thanks. I did not receive your direct email with any attachments for
whatever reason...

The file you sent confirms that the problem is caused by the amd64-microcode
package.

OK good to know. Hope somebody will fix it.

I will fix it, I also take care of amd64-microcode.

jidanni,

Please run as root:
update-initramfs -u -v /tmp/output.txt 21

on the box you're having problems and send the /tmp/output.txt file to me
directly or attach it to the bug report. It will tell me at what point
initramfs-tools decided it needed to include the microcode module, and
might help me solve this mistery.

Thanks

I suggest you file a bug against dkms, then... But before you do that, make
sure you _purged_ the kernels (not just removed them).

You might have to buy a Lenovo G580 to do that, right?
Just tell me the tests you would like me to do.

No, any Intel-based box should be able to reproduce your problem... IF we
find out what condition causes it.

Just tell me the tests you would like me to do.

Please run (as root):
update-initramfs -u -vvv /tmp/output.txt 21

After that, send me the /tmp/output.txt file it will create, plus copies of
/etc/initramfs-tools/*.conf

Please check beforehand whether there is any data you'd like to keep private
on the files you will send. They're all simple text files which you can
edit with your simple text editor of choice (emacs, vim, nano, gedit, kate,
etc). If there is any private data, please overwrite it with XXX.

Look at the first line in /var/log/dmesg... it is not a bug. If your system
needs a processor microcode update, it will now be done so early, it will be
the very first message the kernel logs.

Well, maybe there is a minor bug in that something is annoyingly including
the microcode driver in the initramfs, even when intel-microcode did not ask
for it. No harm done, but it logs those useless error messages and it might
slow the boot down a few tenths of a second.

Did you, perchance, configured initramfs-tools to insert _all_ modules on
the initramfs? That might do it...

Is it trying to tell me I need a BIOS update?
Apparently not,
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS035106

Actually it seems there could be a package could check and report if the
bios was old... but it would need a big static list of all bios ever
made, or ... etc. never mind.
