When I run that command, I get a rather big list of programs that I'd
prefer not to delete. Practically my entire installation including the
kernel gets shot. Obviously that isn't quite what I'm aiming to do...

Does this sound like anything you've ever had to deal with? Because if
not, I'm getting the feeling that this isn't wine-specific... if I need
to file a bug in a different place, then please let me know!

What does installing libc6:i386 on its own say?

apt-get install libc6:i386
