With today's Jessie updates, iceweasel was upgraded from 17 to 24.
Firefox 17 never worked on ia64 because of upstream bug #910845 [1].
Despite of Stephan Schreiber's hard work, his patches failed to be
merged in time for Firefox 17 release and thus to iceweasel 17.
Fortunately, these were merged upstream for Firefox 24, so I had great
hopes of upgrading my system from iceweasel 10 (last working on ia64)
to 24.
Well, it's simply impossible to surf the web with iceweasel 24 at the
moment: entering an URL in the URL edit box and then hitting the Enter
key or clicking the Go button has no effect at all. Similarly,
entering keywords in the Search edit box and hitting Enter or clicking
the Magnifying glass button has no effect either. It's noteworthy that
everything else (i.e. navigating Firefox menus and dialogs) seems to
work fine.
I was hitting the exact same issue on Gentoo, though with Firefox 26
[2], as I never succeeded in compiling Firefox 24 [3]. But I
nevertheless was more lucky on Gentoo as messages displayed in the
console quickly oriented me to upstream bug #812647 [4]. Original
patch didn't work and I was asked to test patch of upstream bug
#878791 [5] that fixed the problem for me.
iceweasel 26 isn't available in unstable for ia64, so I can't checked
whether patch for upstream bug #878791 has been merged by iceweasel
team or not. Would it be possible to ensure this, please, so I can
test either iceweasel 24 or 26 on ia64 again and report the results?
At the moment, setting severity to important as iceweasel is simply
unusable on ia64.
