Given it's one of the last blocking package to be able to install a ppc64el machine, I have just uploaded a fixed package in DELAYED/4. So, I've given things some thought since we had this conversation, and I'm thinking the following should happen: For jessie: - Rename powerpc-utils(src) to powermac-utils, producing a binary by the same name. - Produce powerpc-utils(binary) from the powerpc-ibm-utils source, and on powerpc/ppc64 make it depend transitionally on powermac-utils, while on ppc64el, it wouldn't. After jessie: - Drop the pointless transitional dep, so powerpc-utils is actually the package that matches the upstream project of the same name. I'd also really like to have a look at if (p)mac-fdisk is needed at all anymore, or if the util-linux fdisk can finally do all the things Macs needs, so we can stop with the crazy shuffling of files there. Happy to take over (co-)maintenance here for any of the above, so we can sort all this out and make jessie on ppc* slightly less confusing. ... Adam, I can add ppc64el, but someone else will need to compile it even on powerpc - my toolchain is in a truly sorry state. I could NMU-with-consent, or even add myself to Uploaders and co- maintain, if you'd be okay with that? I'd be absolutely OK with that. Given the upload history, I get the impression it's mostly self-maintaining anyway, but it wouldn't hurt to bring it up to current packaging/toolchain/etc standards, and I'd be happy to do that. Go ahead - I still use Debian on my powerbook but I admit to being mostly out of it now, A bit of m68k stuff, not much time for anything else. With ppc Macs not longer a moving target, there's the odd wishlist item filed that I can't really do much about, and it's tracking package standards changes and such like mostly. Still tends to bitrot if not looked after. I'll look into the epoch thing - do I need to conflict on powerpc-ibm-utils as well? Nope. We're carrying both (just as Debian is), we just accidentally got an inflated version number when someone took an IBM wishlist "please upgrade to new version" bug at face value without looking closely enough, and I had to revert: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/powerpc-utils/1.2.18+r1.1.3 -24ubuntu1 Happens if you're in a hurry I guess. If adding an epoch sorts it out for you, I'm fine with that. Thanks for pointing out that powerpc-ibm-utils has already been packaged. I'll try to keep that in mind for the next odd wishlist request in a few year's time. Packaged, and orphaned. I think I'll rescue -ibm-utils while I'm on this warpath, and make sure the world's in good shape. I would have expected better of them. Anyway, if that keeps them off our back, it's well worth the effort. Hi Adam, I can add ppc64el, but someone else will need to compile it even on powerpc - my toolchain is in a truly sorry state. Cheers, Michael Package: powerpc-utils Severity: normal It would be lovely if you added ppc64el to the arch list for powerpc-utils to enable building on that new port (already in Ubuntu, and likely to show up in debian-ports at some point in the not-too-distant future). Also, while this is a bit of a strange request, I'd love it if you could add an epoch to the version to help your downstreams (namely us, *sigh*) skip over a versioning snafu where someone accidentally "upgraded" powerpc- utils to powerpc-ibm-utils and I had to revert it. ...
