Bug#764437: console-setup hangs during install in jessie/wheezy on eeepc 1005ha

2015-01-04 Thread mls
Just run into a similar problem when upgrading from wheezy to jessie on a
fitPC1. apt-get disp-upgrade worked until the postinst step for console-setup
and hang. With htop I see

 2999 root 20 └─ sshd: root@pts/9
22937 root 20 └─ apt-get install console-setup

22947 root 20 └─ /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 20 --configure console-
setup:all
22948 root└─ /usr/bin/perl -w /usr/share/debconf/frontend
/var/lib/dpkg/info/console-setup.postinst configure
23007 root 20└─ console-setup.p

I killed the process in order to finish the installation. Then I removed the
console-setup package and tried to reinstall it several times again. It always
hanged. Any idea?

I tested ckbcomp us/ckbcomp de and it looked good.
Output of sh -x /bin/setupcon /tmp/setupcon.debug attached.

Bug#764437: console-setup hangs during install in jessie/wheezy on eeepc 1005ha

I don't think there is anything hardware-specific in ckbcomp. Try running

ckbcomp us

I suppose everything will be OK with ckbcomp.

If this is so, then the next suspect is /bin/setupcon. Try restoring
ckbcomp and running setupcon by hand (from the text console). Does it
work? If no, then this is good as it will be easier to debug. Please
run

sh -x /bin/setupcon /tmp/setupcon.debug

and send the file setupcon.debug.

Otherwise (that is if setupcon works), there must be something early
during the boot process causing the problem. In this case you can
replace the line

if setupcon -k 2/dev/null; then

in the script /etc/init.d/keyboard-setup with

if setupcon -k 2/tmp/setupcon.debug; then

Then send us the content of the file setupcon.debug.

Anton Zinoviev

P.S. In case this laptop is a multiuser system, don't forget to restore the
original content of /etc/init.d/keyboard-setup because ouputting to a
fixed file name in a world-writtable directory is a security risk.

 Dear Maintainer,

Installing Debian Wheezy or Jessie with a net install iso on my EEEPC 1005HA
just won't work. It will hang or reboot
on the installing base system around 99% when console-setup runs. I have
tried running the setup with boot params acpi=off,
nomodeset, blacklisting the i915 module, ... nothing gets the job done.
Only way i've found to get around it is to rename or
delete /target/usr/bin/ckbcomp during the install (and you have to be quick
 to catch it).

After doing so and booting the now successful install, renaming
/usr/bin/ckbcomp back, the system will not boot any more.

I've tried installing with different keymaps/locales nothing seems to help...

Hi,

thanks for the bug report. Since this seems to be very (hardware)
specific, I'm adjusting the severity for the time being. Hopefully
somebody will be able to give some hints on how to debug this further.

Mraw,
KiBi.

catch it).

After doing so and booting the now successful install, renaming
/usr/bin/ckbcomp back, the system will not boot any more.

I've tried installing with different keymaps/locales nothing seems to help...
