Thanks for forwarding your issue upstream. Lets try to work it out
ourselfs as well though...

 Hi,

 as I reported upstream in
 http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.utilities.util-linux-ng/1
the script(1) in util-linux 2.25.1 is broken, whereas the one
in util-linux 2.20.1 as currently in jessie works fine. This applies
to both my x32 regular machine as well as a clean, minimal amd64 and
i386 cowbuilder sid chroot, as well as the OpenSuSE Buildservice setup.

Since you seem to have a way to reproduce the problem, could you please
also git bisect it?

This bug opened in Debian to prevent a crashing script(1) from
migrating to testing, and to track progress.

(I don't see this as anything else then just yet another bug in
script. I don't understand why your issue would be more important
then getting 200 other issues fixed for other people.)

Regards,
Andreas Henriksson

Not this week ☹ also, never worked with that before, I’d have to
learn it first. Unless it can be automated? If the result of script
contains “Total passed”, it worked, otherwise not.

git bisect is a way to automate manual tasks, so I'm not sure how
to make it more automated (or what you question really is).

See 'man git bisect' or http://git-scm.com/docs/git-bisect

basically:

git bisect start v2.25.1 v2.20.1 -- term-utils/script.c

./autogen.sh ./configure make

reproduce using ./script (instead of /usr/bin/script)

git bisect bad|good

rinse and repeat step 2+3 until git tells you the bad commit

Andreas Henriksson

Bug#764547: bsdutils: script(1) is broken, hangs or crashes

2014-10-09 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Control: tags -1 unreproducible moreinfo
Control: severity -1 normal

Hello!

I'm not able to build the old version because of #764580 but since
script has no external dependencies just reverting the changes in
term-utils/script.c should be enough:
git diff v2.20.1..v2.25.1 term-utils/script.c | patch -p1 -R

Building this does not result in any behavioural change for me.

I also tried installing bsdutils 2.20.1-5.11 and saw no change in
behaviour there either.

That there are bugs in script is no news (see other bug reports) and,
partially because of that and partially because of being unreproducible
and partially because script by itself doesn't make bsdutils unusable,
I'm setting the severity to be in line with the rest.

Additional information to help resolve or atleaste reproduce welcome.

Regards,
Andreas Henriksson

Ouch. This sounds like it still involves a lot of manual work.
But thanks for the quick explanation.

Ouch! Does using m4 from jessie or even wheezy help?
