Bug#766426: Dolphin search displays "Invalid protocol" error.
For the benefit of those, like me, who encounter this problem with a recent install, note that the solution has changed since the transition in Testing to KDE Frameworks 5: don't install baloo4, it won't work with current dolphin. Instead, install baloo-kf5. Maintainers, please consider making plasma-desktop (or some package you think is more appropriate - perhaps dolphin) at least recommend baloo-kf5. From what I can tell, right now, nothing even suggests baloo-kf5, and it's rather opaque to an ordinary user that this package might be necessary for some standard functionality. Peace, Brendon
Bug#766426: Dolphin search displays Invalid protocol error.
Package: dolphin Version: 4.14.2-1 I am using Debian unstable (sid), kernel 3.14.15-2 (2014-08-09) x86_64. I reported this bug upstream ( https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339866 ) but was told to report downstream instead as KDE maintainers considered it a packaging problem. As an aside, I wonder why dolphin has to depend on baloo now in Debian. The original bug report is as follows. == When I try searching in Dolphin, it always displays a red warning bar showing Invalid protocol , and no search is ever performed. Console output: dolphin(7601): couldn't create slave: Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'baloosearch'. After I installed ballo, baloo4 and baloo-utils, the red warning bar (as well as the console output above) was gone but Dophin still couldn't find anything (status bar showing 0 Folders, 0 Files), no matter what I input as search keyword. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open Dolphin 2. Press CTRL+F 3. Input some characters as search keyword Actual Results: A red warning bar showing Invalid protocol pops up below the search bar. Expected Results: Dolphin finds folders/files whose names contain the search keyword
