Bug#773110: ITP: openorienteering-mapper -- orienteering mapmaking program
Hi! As an orienteer, I would love to see this in Debian, so just a note to encourage it. :-) Since there is some controversy as to the description, may I suggest something like (I don't think OCAD needs explaining, every possible user of this program would know what it is): OpenOrienteering Mapper is a mapmaking program for the sport of orienteering, where athletes use detailed maps to find their way through a course that is not known to them before the start of a race. This program can be used to produce maps for classical orienteering, MTBO and radio orienteering races. It has drawing and editing tools, includes symbol sets for the norms ISOM 2000 (forest) and ISSOM 2007 (sprint), and features import and export of OCAD files. But I plan to work on this during DebCamp and DebConf in August. So expect something soon! So it can be considered ready for productive use, although it is like always a good idea to keep backups of your files. Thanks for this ITP. This program might vaguely scratch the scope of Debian GIS. If you did not found some other team you might consider maintaining it in Debian GIS. Bug#773110: ITP: openorienteering-mapper -- orienteering mapmaking program
Hi Gaudenz, The software looks very interesting, thanks for ITP'ing it! One comment though: Le dimanche, 14 décembre 2014, 14.32:42 Gaudenz Steinlin a écrit : OpenOrienteering Mapper is an orienteering mapmaking program and provides a free alternative to the existing proprietary OCAD solution. I don't feel that much of this is of interest in a Debian package description: I would rather focus on what the software actually _does_. Also the OCAD acronym is not explained. While it is under continuous development and considered in beta state, it has been used to produce maps for classical orienteering, MTBO and radio orienteering races. All required functions for drawing maps are implemented and the program works very stable. So it can be considered ready for productive use, although it is like always a good idea to keep backups of your files. I wouldn't include this paragraph either, as it feels slightly generic; it doesn't really help to determine whether I should install that software or not.
