Bug#775794: installation-reports: (Un)successful installation on computer with NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
Hi, and thanks for this other installation report. Luis Felipe López Acevedo felipe.lo...@openmailbox.org (2015-01-19): Package: installation-reports Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I successfully installed Debian Jessie Beta 2 on this computer, but I had to struggle to be able to use the installed system with the NVIDIA graphics card. -- Package-specific info: Boot method: CD Image version: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/jessie_di_beta_2/i386/iso-cd/debian-jessie-DI-b2-i386-netinst.iso Date: 2015-01-18 14:30 Machine: Custom built computer Partitions: S.ficheros Tipo bloques de 1K Usados Disponibles Uso% Montado en /dev/sda1 ext4 303536496 3989784 284104896 2% / udev devtmpfs 10240 0 10240 0% /dev tmpfs tmpfs 4013725884 395488 2% /run tmpfs tmpfs 1003428 76 1003352 1% /dev/shm tmpfs tmpfs 5120 45116 1% /run/lock tmpfs tmpfs 1003428 0 1003428 0% /sys/fs/cgroup tmpfs tmpfs 200688 20 200668 1% /run/user/1000 Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot: [O] Detect network card:[O] Configure network: [O] Detect CD: [O] Load installer modules: [O] Clock/timezone setup: [O] User/password setup:[O] Detect hard drives: [O] Partition hard drives: [O] Install base system:[O] Install tasks: [O] Install boot loader:[O] Overall install:[O] Comments/Problems: I did a Graphical install and selected GNOME as the Desktop Environment. There were no problems during installation. However, After restarting the computer to use the installed system, the GNOME login screen displayed blinking artifacts and froze after I entered the password for a user. I restarted the system several times with similar results. Sometimes I couldn't even select the user or enter any password. I tried to change to a text shell to try to do something from the command line, but all I got was a black screen with a frozen white cursor on the upper-left corner. I decided to reinstall the system and selected Mate desktop environment instead of GNOME. After installation there were blinking artifacts on the screen as well, but I was able to login in the graphical shell. To solve the graphics problem of blinking artifacts I had to install NVIDIA 304 legacy drivers as suggested by nvidia-detect utility: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers It's a shame that this machine cannot work without non-free drivers, but now the system is usable. I've added the Gnome list in Cc, maybe they can help you figure out what needs to be done to diagnose and possibly solve the issue you're having without the NVIDIA drivers.
