I tried this but I felt it made the argument too "magic" especially
as you can pass multiple tags. Also, escaping '*' etc. on the command-
line is always a little bit of a pain...

Bug#779675: lintian: Add flag --list-tags that will list all tags Lintian knows about

2017-04-25 Thread Stuart Prescott
As another use case for a --list-tags:

In discussing things in #debian-mentors or #debian-qa it's not uncommon that I
want to look up information from the long description of a tag... but first I
need to guess what the tag is. The long description often has really useful
rationale and links to policy, bugs or other documentation.

My current crappy solution is

$ dpkg -L lintian | xargs grep -hs ^Tag:

My wishlist is:

$ lintian-info --list-tags | grep encoding
debian-changelog-file-uses-obsolete-national-encoding
debian-news-file-uses-obsolete-national-encoding
debian-control-file-uses-obsolete-national-encoding
debian-copyright-file-uses-obsolete-national-encoding

$ lintian-info -t debian-copyright-
debian-copyright-file-uses-obsolete-national-encoding
debian-copyright-is-symlink

(perhaps lintian-info -t could take a glob or regex as an alternative to a
simple tag name)

Bug#779675: lintian: Add flag --list-tags that will list all tags Lintian knows about

2015-03-03 Thread Rajendra Gokhale
Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.6ubuntu0.1
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

I would like to avoid having to maintain multiple

If I ask Lintian to suppress a tag that is known to a later version of Lintian
but not known to the current version it will exit with an error. This can
be problematic in an environment where a package gets built on different
versions of OSes running different versions of Lintian (potentially).

Having a --list-tags option will allow me to take a set of tags I have and
create a new set that consists exclusively of tags known to the current
version of Lintian so that I do not need to maintain a separate list of
override tags for each platform I run lintian on

There could be other uses to for this option
