Bug#794215: chromium isn't your default browser
Package: chromium Version: 46.0.2490.71-1~deb8u1 Followup-For: Bug #794215 Dear Maintainer, Please see response to this bug from Chromium.org Comment #8 on issue 552139 by thes...@chromium.org: Chromium is not default browser https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=552139 Please report this bug to Debian's chromium package. They changed their Chromium package name from "chromium-browser" to "chromium". Thus the .desktop file also changed from "chromium-browser.desktop" to "chromium.desktop". However, Chromium's source code still refers to chromium-browser.desktop in chrome/browser/ui/libgtk2ui/gtk2_util.cc and chrome/browser/shell_integration_linux.cc. Ubuntu and other Linux distros still name their file chromium-browser.desktop. Alternatively, Debian's chromium package can automatically set the CHROME_DESKTOP environment variable to chromium.desktop at run time, if they do not wish to modify the code. You can do the same locally. Instead of running: chromium run: CHROME_DESKTOP=chromium.desktop chromium Then set the browser as default. After that, it should be the default, and as long as you have CHROME_DESKTOP=chromium.desktop set, Chromium will not prompt you about the default browser anymore. -- System Information: Debian Release: 8.2 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_CA.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_CA.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages chromium depends on: ii libasound2 1.0.28-1 ii libatk1.0-0 2.14.0-1 ii libc62.19-18+deb8u1 ii libcairo21.14.0-2.1 ii libcups2 1.7.5-11+deb8u1 ii libdbus-1-3 1.8.20-0+deb8u1 ii libexpat12.1.0-6+deb8u1 ii libfontconfig1 2.11.0-6.3 ii libfreetype6 2.5.2-3+deb8u1 ii libgcc1 1:4.9.2-10 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 2.31.1-2+deb8u3 ii libglib2.0-0 2.42.1-1 ii libgnome-keyring03.12.0-1+b1 ii libgtk2.0-0 2.24.25-3 ii libjpeg62-turbo 1:1.3.1-12 ii libnspr4 2:4.10.7-1+deb8u1 ii libnss3 2:3.17.2-1.1+deb8u2 ii libpango-1.0-0 1.36.8-3 ii libpangocairo-1.0-0 1.36.8-3 ii libpci3 1:3.2.1-3 ii libspeechd2 0.8-7 ii libsrtp0 1.4.5~20130609~dfsg-1.1 ii libstdc++6 4.9.2-10 ii libx11-6 2:1.6.2-3 ii libxcomposite1 1:0.4.4-1 ii libxcursor1 1:1.1.14-1+b1 ii libxdamage1 1:1.1.4-2+b1 ii libxext6 2:1.3.3-1 ii libxfixes3 1:5.0.1-2+b2 ii libxi6 2:1.7.4-1+b2 ii libxml2 2.9.1+dfsg1-5 ii libxrandr2 2:1.4.2-1+b1 ii libxrender1 1:0.9.8-1+b1 ii libxslt1.1 1.1.28-2+b2 ii libxss1 1:1.2.2-1 ii libxtst6 2:1.2.2-1+b1 ii x11-utils7.7+2 ii xdg-utils1.1.0~rc1+git20111210-7.4 chromium recommends no packages. Bug#794215: chromium isn't your default browser
Package: chromium Version: 44.0.2403.107-1 Followup-For: Bug #794215 I have run into the same problem. Chromium is not the default browser, atleast not under GNOME. Under GNOME's default application list, chromium is not even listed. I manually ran update-desktop-database, but still it does not show in the list of Default Browsers. I have also set gnome-www-browser and x-www-browser to chromium explicitly. But if I click on a link in evolution, it does not pick chromium. rrs@learner:~$ file /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser: symbolic link to /usr/bin/chromium 2015-08-06 / 13:38:43 ♒♒♒ ☺ rrs@learner:~$ sudo update-alternatives --list x-www-browser [sudo] password for rrs: /usr/bin/chromium /usr/bin/iceweasel 2015-08-06 / 13:38:58 ♒♒♒ ☺ -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (101, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.1.4+ (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_IN.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_IN.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages chromium depends on: ii libasound2 1.0.29-1 ii libatk1.0-0 2.16.0-2 ii libc62.19-19 ii libcairo21.14.2-2 ii libcups2 2.0.3-10 ii libdbus-1-3 1.8.20-1 ii libexpat12.1.0-7 ii libfontconfig1 2.11.0-6.3 ii libfreetype6 2.5.2-4 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 2.31.5-1 ii libglib2.0-0 2.44.1-1.1 ii libgnome-keyring03.12.0-1+b1 ii libgtk2.0-0 2.24.28-1 ii libharfbuzz0b1.0.1-1 ii libjpeg62-turbo 1:1.4.1-1 ii libnspr4 2:4.10.8-2 ii libnss3 2:3.19.2-1 ii libpango-1.0-0 1.36.8-3 ii libpangocairo-1.0-0 1.36.8-3 ii libpci3 1:3.2.1-3 ii libspeechd2 0.8-7 ii libspeex11.2~rc1.2-1 ii libsrtp0 1.4.5~20130609~dfsg-1.1 ii libstdc++6 5.1.1-14 ii libx11-6 2:1.6.3-1 ii libxcomposite1 1:0.4.4-1 ii libxcursor1 1:1.1.14-1+b1 ii libxdamage1 1:1.1.4-2+b1 ii libxext6 2:1.3.3-1 ii libxfixes3 1:5.0.1-2+b2 ii libxi6 2:1.7.4-1+b2 ii libxml2 2.9.2+dfsg1-3 ii libxrandr2 2:1.5.0-1 ii libxrender1 1:0.9.8-1+b1 ii libxslt1.1 1.1.28-2+b2 ii libxss1 1:1.2.2-1 ii libxtst6 2:1.2.2-1+b1 ii x11-utils7.7+3 ii xdg-utils1.1.0~rc1+git20111210-7.4 chromium recommends no packages. Bug#794215: chromium isn't your default browser
Package: chromium Version: 44.0.2403.89-1~deb8u1 Severity: normal Dear maintener, When I run a chromium session the system always plays: Chromium isn't your default browser then the choice is Set as default or Don't ask again. Nothing works. In Chromium settings same messages; nothing works as well. I suggest that the set as default button works.
