this is mostly related to not trusting selfsigned CAs and/or weak HASH
algorithm. Also SSLv3 isn't trusted as default any longer.

Please take a look at

  https://wiki.debian.org/Icedove#Debugging_Icedove_Activity

and investigate the output.

Please also note the informations in
  /usr/share/doc/icedove/README.debian.gz

Bug#824171: icedove can't open folder on IMAP server, shows "checking server capabilites" then nothing.

2016-05-13 Thread John Hughes
Package: icedove
Version: 38.7.0-1~deb8u3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

Did an aptitude upgrade, upgraded icedove from
38.5.0-1~deb8u1 to 38.7.0-1~deb8u3

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Started icedove, tried to open folder on my imap server

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Icedove displays Checking mail server capabilities...
but does not show contents of folder.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Display contents of folder, let me see the messages.

Possibly related, I have the sieve extension and if I try to edit my sieve
filters I get a "server terminated unexpectedly the connection".

My imap server, cyrus-imapd-2.4, version 2.4.16-4+deb7u2 uses SSL and
kerberos. I have an internal CA, which is added to the icedove CA list.

If I downgrade to 38.5.0-1~deb8u1 everything works as before.
